Great Tips from Successful Retailers

Hi, my name is Marcin Golebiowski, my wife Susan and I opened European Treats in August 2017. Our store is in Michigan's Upper Peninsula's city of Ironwood, we moved here a couple of years ago because living in a big city with four children was starting to get hard to keep up with. The slow pace of life in the beautiful Northwoods was exactly what our family needed. We opened European Treats because there was nothing around for hundreds of miles that could offer items that European Treats carries. We love European foods and chocolates which was also the reason for starting this business.

SSS: 1. Describe your proudest moment as a business owner?


EUROPEAN TREATS: We have a lot of proud moments: when people come out in the middle of snowstorm just to shop at our store. Hearing Customers tell us how great our store is and then telling their friends who come in and they say the same thing. Having someone ask for something random that we actually have in stock. Seeing people's reactions when they see something we have that reminds them of their childhood or their visit to Europe.


SSS: 2. What are the new/existing challenges you are facing as a retailer/business owner?


EUROPEAN TREATS: Downtown Ironwood had a terrible fire few months ago that completely destroyed two buildings and claimed three lives. It affected the whole community, but it is recovering. The harsh winter weather is also a challenge and it can get literally dead at times. All of it is compensated by simply breathtaking beauty of the area that attracts many tourists.

SSS: 3. What is the long-term vision for your store?


EUROPEAN TREATS: We would like to expand and carry even more products than we already do, possibly put in a deli.


SSS: 4. What type of marketing works best for you?


EUROPEAN TREATS: We get a good response from Facebook, radio ads but mostly word of mouth brings people in to check us out.


SSS: 5. When it comes to customer service, how do you keep your customers happy?


EUROPEAN TREATS: To keep customers happy we try to constantly get in new items and some special requested ones too. And as the owner I like to be the store personally helping my customers with anything they need.

SSS: 6. What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned since launching your business?


EUROPEAN TREATS: The most valuable lesson learned was that in a place where life is slow and relaxed you can’t expect that business will be any different.


SSS: 7. What solution/problem are you solving with our products and why? What are the results?


EUROPEAN TREATS: We love using your products to get more out of our products out; it helps when you have a lot of good items to choose from especially when it is a nice display.

SSS: 8. What are your favorite things you have ordered from SSS and how has it helped your business?


EUROPEAN TREATS: We love the Gondola Shelves; they hold the store together and we constantly get compliments on them. We also love the mesh baskets for our bulk candy along with the light up sign.
